Former First Lady Michelle Obama is set to speak at SJSU's 2018 Commencement Ceremony on May 23 at the Event Center.
"The hyphy movement is one of my favorites, so I'm excited to spend time in the bay" said Obama.
Obama's recent visit to Oakland's Oracle Arena for a moderated conversational event inspired her to become more involved in Silicon Valley's youth and future generations.
"I am so honored to be chosen to speak," said Obama, "I want every single graduate to walk out feeling empowered like they can take over the world."
This will Obama's first time coming to SJSU's campus.
Chloe Manalac serves as Associated Student's Director of Communications and plans on acting as a tour guide for Obama.
"I am completely obsessed with the Obamas. I keep up with everything they do, so being able to show her around and then watch and see her speak is a dream come true," said Manalac.
Manalac plans on bringing Obama to the Martin Luther King library which highlights as both a public and private library.
"I think other students will be excited to hear her speak. A lot of us feel she's relateable to our struggles as students," said Manalac.
Obama has previously spoken at a variety of universities ranging from City College of New York City to University of California Merced.
"I wanted a speaker I felt students could connect with. Her previous commencement speeches evoked so much emotion from students," said SJSU's President Mary A. Papazian, "I knew she would be the perfect speaker for the class of 2018."
After months of negotiation and discussion, Papazian managed to bring Obama to SJSU.
Obama is an advocate for many issues including nutritional lunches in schools, gender equality in the work force, poverty awareness and more.
Before her time as First Lady, Obama graduated from both Princeton and Harvard Law School after which she spent working in law, the public sector and in education.
"Every student has the ability to make a difference. I want to remind them no one can stop them," said Obama.
SJSU's 2018 Commencement Ceremony starts at 5PM with doors opening at 4PM.
