Comparing media
The shooting at a high school in Florida that killed 14 students and three faculty members last Thursday is still being covered in the media and has caused a multitude of debates to arise throughout the nation.
Front and center of today's issue of the New York Times are two articles regarding this topic that continues onto a full page spread revealing two more articles.
One of the articles was a feature regarding former assistant principal Joel Myrick, who happened to be armed during a school shooting.
While Myrick was able to scare off the assailant, he does not approve of arming teachers.
Myrick revealed he suffered from acute stress, nightmares, and misery after the event.
"Teachers have to teach, and that's what they should be doing...You don't need to be in school in charge of protecting children," Myrick said.
CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 show dedicated more than 10 minutes of their 5 p.m. news to a live segment called "Gunning for Change" about the same topic.
Cooper interviewed three different faculty members regarding Pres. Trump's suggestion about giving bonuses to armed teachers.
"Do you put one of the six year olds in charge while you go out to engage the shooter? Our first responsibility when we're in a classroom with children is to keep them safe," said Mary Ann Jacob a library clerk at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Her opinions reflect Myrick in that teachers should not be armed.
Online new sites have become the front runner for breaking news as stories continue to unfold.
New York Time's online news site reported a deputy took cover rather than run to the aid of students.
These online new sites have turned their attention towards this new development rather than the continuing debates as seen on print and T.V.
The rest of the article reflected on how other officials mishandled previous tips called in the past two years about the shooter Nikolas Cruz.
While this New York Time's article did not mention anything about gun control or arming teachers, it leans towards the opinions expressed in its newspaper.
Anderson Cooper's 360 show provided the best coverage since he interviewed people with differing opinions as to not create a bias.
